Arizona ranks in the top five states for animal euthanasia, with some shelters reporting kill rates as high as 55%. In fact, one Maricopa County shelter reports euthanizing an average of one pet every 10 minutes during operating hours.
The Russ George Agency is leading a local campaign to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome pets that have been orphaned, abused, or abandoned. “Our agency is heartbroken that euthanasia rates in our community are so high. Using a referral and rewards program, we are organizing a long term effort in Maricopa County to encourage other residents to help us rescue and rehome orphaned pets rather than allowing them to be euthanized,” said agency CEO Michael Bailey.
